Breats implant surgery or breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to enlarge the breasts. There are a number of methods available but all involve making a space underneath the breats tissue and inserting a breast-shaped sac or implant. Breats implants can be made of natural body tissue or synthetic (man-made) materials. About 80% of breats implants are for cosmetic reasons. The remaining 20% are breast reconstructions after surgery, often for breast cancer.

In 1992, responding to claims that silicone gel-filled breast implants had harmed tens of thousands of women, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the marketing of the devices for breast augmentation.

Types of breats implants

Natural tissue breats implants
These are used in breast reconstruction surgery following the removal of all or part of the breast due to breast cancer. Skin, fat and muscle are taken from another part of the body, implanted into the chest and moulded to form a natural breast shape.

Synthetic breats implants

Silicone gel-filled breats implants are available to women of any age for breast reconstruction or women age 22 and older for breast augmentation. This includes primary surgery to put breast implants into place and also revision surgery to correct or improve prior implant placement.

There are two types of saline-filled implants. One type is a fixed volume implant, which is filled with the entire volume of saline at implantation. Another type is an adjustable volume implant, which is filled intraoperatively and has the potential for further postoperative adjustment. Saline-filled implants continue to be an excellent alternative to silicone. At Wellesley Cosmetic Surgery, we offer both types of implants to our patients. Saline-filled adjustable implants are not offered by all surgeons and require an additional incision, and thus an additional scar.

Breats implants can contain different filler materials inside a silicone elastomer shell. Only two types of breast implant filler are currently in use in the UK:

  • silicone gel
  • silicone

You cannot have breats implant surgery if you:

  • Are under 18 years of age
  • Are pregnant
  • Are breast-feeding
  • Have breats cancer that has not yet been treated
  • Have current active illness or infection

Both saline-filled and silicone gel-filled breast implants have risks, including:

  • Implant rupture
  • Need for additional breast surgery
  • Scar tissue that hardens around and distorts the breast implant (capsular contracture)
  • Breast pain
  • Decreased nipple or breast sensation
  • Infection
  • Breast augmentation
