Blepharoplasty, or cosmetic eye surgery, was described nearly seventy years ago and then practiced with only minor refinements. Twenty years ago, a major innovation initiated rapid evolution in eyelid surgery technique while also introducing its own set of shortcomings that have only recently begun to be addressed.

As you age, your eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess fat may gather above and below your eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, drooping upper lids and bags under your eyes. Besides making you look older, severely sagging skin around your eyes also can impair your vision. (more…)

As we age, excess skin forms in the eye area and the skin loses elasticity. Fatty tissue can accumulate under the skin. Your eyes will “look older” because these aging processes leave the eyes appearing tired, wrinkled, or puffy. Even with a good skincare and eyecare regimen, wrinkles, puffiness, and drooping eyelids will catch up to you. (more…)

We’ve put together everything you need to know from the very basics to information about finding a doctor and recovering from surgery.

As we age, our facial skin loosens and wrinkles, causing drooping brows as well as creases and lines that can make us appear angry, sad, old or tired. The skin begins to lose its elasticity. Sun, wind, and the pull of gravity all affect the face, resulting in frown lines, wrinkling across the forehead, and an increasing heaviness of the eyebrows.A forehead lift, also called a browlift, corrects the drooping or low position of the eyebrows. Browlifts are often performed in conjunction with other facial cosmetic procedures, especially upper and lower eyelid lifts (blepharoplasty) to achieve a more natural, harmonious facial appearance. (more…)

The submuscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) has been steeped in controversy. The goal of our anatomic study was to further clarify the existence of the SMAS. Facelift surgery has undergone a major evolution since Lexer performed the first face lift operation in 1906 and Hollander subsequently reported a case in 1912.1 These pioneering procedures simply involved removal of the excessive skin.

SMAS is the layer of connective tissue between your outer skin layer and the muscles below your skin. By tightening the SMAS layer, drooping facial features are restored to a more youthful face position. (more…)
